Reimagining Cheaha

A Lodge Rooted in Legacy, Built for the Future

A Modern Icon in Alabama’s Oldest State Park

Perched atop the state’s highest point, the new Cheaha State Park Lodge honors the rich history of the Civilian Conservation Corps era lodge it replaces—bringing innovation, sustainability, and craftsmanship to life through an innovative construction approach: Cross Laminated Timber (CLT).

“At Murray Construction, we’re always building something bigger than the project itself. Cheaha is about legacy, community, and sustainability—and we’re proud to be a part of that story.”

Daniel Murray - President

Why Cross Laminated Timber?

A Sustainable, Smart Solution for the South

CLT’s modular system allows faster construction—which will minimize impact to the park while allowing more time for detail and craftsmanship. CLT is engineered wood made from layered panels, delivering:

A First for Alabama. A Model for the Nation.

This is the first major state-owned building in Alabama constructed using CLT—and it’s made almost entirely from Alabama-grown Southern Yellow Pine.

The design reflects the topography of the mountain, blending seamlessly into the environment while standing as a testament to Southern innovation.

CLT is a mass timber product made from layers of lumber stacked perpendicular to each other and glued together. It offers strength similar to concrete and steel but is lighter, renewable, and easier to work with.

This is one of the first large-scale public projects using Southern Yellow Pine CLT, creating demand for local forestry products and showing new possibilities for construction in the Southeast.

Yes. The design pays tribute to the CCC-era lodge while incorporating modern materials and environmentally conscious design principles.

Not at all. The lodge will host families, hikers, educators, and events—providing access to nature and showcasing innovation in building methods.

Absolutely. With the success at Cheaha, this CLT approach is being explored for educational, municipal, and recreational projects across the region.
